What to do after the finale…

The ANTM finale is soon approaching and some of you may be wondering what you’re going to watch until September when cycle 11 starts. Here’s a suggestion for you… check out some of the international Top Model shows!

Alice BurdeuAustralia’s Next Top Model
AusNTM just aired their week 2 episode, so if you start watching now, you won’t even have much catching up to do. They’re in cycle 4, after a hugely successful previous cycle, yielding undoubtedly the most successful Top Model yet — Alice Burdeu (on left).

The host is Johdi Meares, and — unlike ANTM — AusNTM’s finale is decided in a live show, where viewers can be involved in choosing the girl to take the title.  This cycle’s thirteen contestants range in age from 16-21 years old.  My favorite so far… Jamie Lee, the 21-year-old blonde from South Australia.

You can find the first episode on YouTube.  SQWEEK77 has been kind enough to upload it for us.  Thanks, SQWEEK77!

Here are all this cycle’s girls, in order of my favorites to least favorites:

Britain’s Next Top Model
BNTM also just aired their second episode, so very little catch-up viewing is necessary.  They are also in cycle four.  Previous winners were Lucy Ratcliffe, Lianna Fowler, and Lauren McAvoy (on right).

The host is Lisa Snowdon, and the winner receives a contract with Max Factor cosmetics, a contract with Models 1, and a cover of Company Magazine.  This cycle’s fourteen contestants range in age from 18 to 24.  My favorite thus far… 18-year-old Lauren Donaldson-Stanley from Hampshire.

The first two episodes can be found online courtesy of BNTM4.  Thanks bunches!

And, here are the girls from this cycle, in order of my favorite to least favorite:

Some Revealing Thoughts from Lauren’s Interview

I haven’t read all the Lauren interview yet, but when I read this one (LINK), there were a few things that definitely caught my eye.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I can model. You know, when you look at my pictures, they were way better than the other girls.

Seriously? Way better? Even this debacle?

Methinks the praise she got from the judges went a bit to her head… I’ll agree that some of her photos (meat shoot) were better than the other girls, but “way better”? Huh.

Kat and Anya didn’t manipulate people, like a lot of the other girls… Dominique, Whitney and Fatima are not nice girls. They give you the guise of being nice and sweet but underneath, there’s something else there. They are not good role models. They talk a lot of crap about the other girls and about the judges. They are insecure people and use those insecurities to prey on others. It’s disgusting.

Wow. I mean, I’m sure she has some biases, but I was going to give at least Dominique and Whitney the benefit of the doubt and assume that at least some of their attitude was due to editing. Seems that was not the case. On a related note, Whitney’s really been getting on my nerves lately, too. She really needs to work on that brain-to-mouth filter.

Being on the show, they don’t show you how to do that. I need real model training. I want someone to train me how to walk and how to be in front of a camera. The show exists with this level of expectation that you know what you’re doing and will be able to handle the twists they throw at you. There wasn’t training.

Hello? Isn’t that the purpose of the show? No wonder it seemed like they were spending endless hours in the house wearing on each others’ nerves… they had nothing else to do! Pardon me while I reminisce back to the earlier cycles where they actually had the girls work out every day… where their lessons lasted for more than 10 minutes… and where girls were actually taught how to walk instead of just being told that they were doing it wrong. Ahhhh… those were the days.

But I’m not going to BS like the other girls. Jeez, their commercials were awful too. Like, how fake was Whitney? That was horrid. And Dominique? She looked like a drag queen. The guy shooting the commercial was more of a girl than her. She was a hooker.

Hilarious! And, Lauren… I totally agree.

Tyra? I don’t know. She doesn’t like Kat much though.

You know, Claire said the same thing in her interview. What is it with Tyra’s hating on this girl? It doesn’t make any sense at all! She has a fantastic walk, a great look… all of the industry people seem to like her, but Tyra criticizes everything she does. At first I thought it was an edit, so that partway through she could have this amazing transformation and win the hearts of the judges, but Tyra’s still picking her apart week after week… and yet she’s never been in the bottom two, either. It makes no sense to me at all.

So… how bad is it that I like Lauren more now that she’s gone than when she was actually on the show?

Viva Italy! Episode Recap

April 24, 2008 at 1:38 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 4 Comments

My YouTube shout out this week goes out to andezzz !  Thanks for uploading ANTM for us!

So, another week, another elimination.  Who will continue on in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Tyra Banks?

Our story picks up with the model-wannabes at the airport, getting off the plane in Rome.  “It was like going to a museum!” quips Dominique.  I have no words for this girl… if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear she was a blonde.  Each girl gets a chance to tell us exactly why she’s so excited about being in Rome.  And Lauren gets the awkward, I-don’t-fit-in-here, edited-to-look-like-she’s-giving-up confessional.  Hang on, Lauren fans… it doesn’t look good!

They get off at the Coliseum… and Anya trips and falls out of the van.  That’s what you get for wearing heels on a day of sight-seeing.

TYRA MAIL!
You’re in Rome now, but this is no holiday… blah blah blah… go find your new home.

And screaming ensues.

I must admit, the Rome home far supersedes the one in New York.  Or, as Katarzyna says, it’s “off the chain!”  90s gangsta, anyone?  Of course, doesn’t it make sense that the top six girls would get the chance to live in someplace better than the top 13 or 14?

And… we have our obligatory illness of this cycle.  And, surprise, it’s the drama queen herself, Fatima.

And, surprise, it’s Dominique that tells her to get a grip.  And, surprise, it’s Anya who goes in to help her out and get her something to eat.  And there you have the basic personification of each of those three girls — Fatima‘s a whiner, Dominique thinks she knows it all, and Anya gets the “sweetest girl ever, even to others that don’t deserve it” award.  And, then there’s some short little clip where everyone else is sleeping and Lauren is making noise… I really don’t know what it had to do with anything, besides pointing out, as Whitney says, “I think Lauren is so over the competition.”  Strike two for Lauren.

TYRA MAIL!
Be careful how you roll?  You may miss the beauty in Rome.

And Anya apparently thinks they’ll be “rolling down the river”?  Uh… huh.

Oh how exciting, they get to ride on segways.
— side note — Why is Whitney‘s hair always so nasty-looking in the confessionals? —

And they go around the city and look at women wearing Italian fashion… women who were probably all staged.  Seriously… who wears bright red heels with beige or black dresses?  Ugh.

And Lauren talks about how the fashion looks cool, but she can’t see herself wearing it.  Strike three, Lauren, strike three.

Challenge time… they’re supposed to get dressed up and meet Gai Mattiolo, and try to impress him.  Fatima looks like she’s wearing way too much makeup.  Katarzyna looked amazing.  And… how did Anya win?  Her outfit looked ridiculous, and nothing like the neutral-coloured, long-skirted outfits the Italian women were sporting.  Plus, I thought her walk wasn’t nearly as good as Katarzyna‘s, Whitney‘s, or even Dominique‘s.  Say what?

TYRA MAIL!
Facile, Brezza, Bella.  Love, Tyra
Katarzyna is the smart cookie who figures it out… “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful.”  It’s a Cover Girl commercial in Italian!  And Lauren talks about how much she’s been dreading it, because she’s not a Cover Girl.  Strike four, Lauren, strike four.

It’s a 30-second spot for Cover Girl Queen Vibrant Hues Lip Color.  I’m already cringing in anticipation.  Did anyone else think that this lipstick looked AWFUL on everyone?  Does NOT make me want to buy it!

Commercial Highlights:
Anya looked lost, but was flirty and cute.
Katarzyna looked the best of all the girls in the lipstick, and did amazing, but was a bit flat.
Dominique proved herself to be Jade 2.0 with her high-stepping, throwing her arms up, and looking ridiculous and overeager.
Lauren‘s was simply painful to watch.
Fatima did extremely well.
Whitney was way over the top

TYRA MAIL!
Tomorrow you will meet with the judges… blah blah blah, love Tyra

Lauren is nervous… strike five.  Whitney is nervous… not a good sign.

Judging panel highlights:
– Tyra has a new hairdo, which I must say, looks TONS better than the one she was sporting back in New York.

– Tyra brags about how she’s walked in the Spanish Steps fashion show four times, and that she walked in a Gai Mattiolo fashion show.  Shameless, Tyra, shameless.
– Dominique’s wearing that hideous purple sweater again, and Whitney’s wearing the same black dress she’s worn… what, three times now?

– Katarzyna speaks up — and Tyra notices!  Of course, her speaking up was basically trying to get Tyra to pronounce her name correctly… and it didn’t work.  Tyra even seemed a bit annoyed with her about it at the end there.  Uh-oh… watch out, Kat… you don’t want to get on her bad side!

The commercials, from my favorite to least favorite…

Katarzyna
The girl looked good, delivered well, and wasn’t over the top.  The fact that Tyra liked Whitney’s way-too-dramatic commercial, and disliked Kat’s “boring” one speaks volumes about what kind of person Tyra’s looking for.

Fatima
She rocked the pronunciations, but lacked Katarzyna’s charm.  Overall a really good commercial, though.

Anya
Sure, she was uncertain about the Italian… who wouldn’t be?  But she managed to stumble through it somewhat gracefully.

Whitney
Quite over-the-top, but even with that in mind, I could totally see it on TV… actresses have a tendency to overdo it sometimes.

Dominique
Scary.

Lauren
Painful to watch.

And the call-out order goes something like this:
1. Fatima (Nigel’s top pick… looks like he still holds quite a bit of sway over the judging panel)
2. Katarzyna
3. Anya
4. Dominique (WTF?  Hers was awful!  How is this girl still in the running??)
5. Whitney

And it was a good time for Lauren to go home.  I could never picture her on the final runway or doing “My Life as a Covergirl.”  Of course, I would have been happier if Dominique had been the one to go home… oh well… maybe next week.

Episode Guide #10-12

Episode 10: Viva Italia! (airing 4/23/08 ) FINAL SIX!
The remaining models head off to their international destination, Italy, where they are faced with the challenging task of filming a commercial in Italian.
My commentary on this episode here.

Episode 11: We Are Spartans! (airing 4/30/08 ) FINAL FIVE!
The models learn Gladiator-style fighting with swords. Later, they are photographed by Tyra in an old Roman castle, where one of the girls leaves Tyra startled with her beauty.
My commentary on this episode here.

Episode 12: Ready For My Close-Up (airing 5/7/08 ) FINAL FOUR!
The roles are turned when the models are asked to step behind the camera and photograph Paulina. Later, Nigel photographs the contestants in a photo shoot where they must pose as famous movie icons. In the end, the girls find themselves in an unpleasant situation when none of the judges are impressed with a single model’s photograph.
This is one episode description that actually makes me want to watch the episode. Basically, because it sounds so awful. When I read that the girls were going to take over the cameras, I audibly scoffed. It kind of reminded me of Sara c8 and her insistence that she was going to win because she’s a photographer. While I can see how someone who is a good photographer might be better prepared to be on the other side of the camera… it definitely doesn’t work the other way. What makes them think that models are going to make good photographers? The hilarious part is that they’re probably just going to have the setup all ready for them, put the camera settings on “automatic” and then go on and on about what wonderful photographers they are. While you can get some good shots just pointing and shooting, a real photographer knows that there’s a lot more to a fashion shot than just that… way more than they could teach the girls in the course of a few hours.

Later, Nigel makes them pose as movie icons. Oh please… not again. For those of you that might have forgotten, cycle 2 had a celebrity photo shoot, and cycle 7 had an awful celebrity couples photo shoot. I’m really quite done with the “let’s dress up like someone else” photo shoot. And what sort of movie icons are the final four going to portray? Are these classic movie icons (a la Audrey Hepburn and Bette Midler?) or are these more contemporary celebrities (a la Anna Nicole Smith?)? Either way, it’s probably going to be just as awful as cycle 2 and cycle 7.

Oh, and wait — yes, it is! Tyra & Co. can’t find a single photo they like! MAYBE it’s because you’re not really shooting movie icons… you’re shooting girls pretending to be movie icons… and MAYBE it’s not a big surprise because it’s a lame idea for a photo shoot! Here’s a question for those more involved in the modeling world…

How likely is it really going to be that any of these girls in their modeling careers are going to be asked to dress up as another movie star/celebrity for an actual photo shoot?
And then… why have we in the course of ten cycles have we had THREE photo shoots that do just that? Hmmmmmm?

7Up Portfolio = Screencaps?

April 20, 2008 at 5:04 pm | Posted in Anya, Dominique, Fatima, Katarzyna, Lauren, promo, random thoughts, StacyAnn, Whitney | 2 Comments

Seriously? What is up with the 7Up portfolio on the CW site? Pretty much the only reason I ever go to the CW site is for their higher-quality candids of the girls throughout the episode. But this 7Up portfolio is really something of a joke.

Please note: The following photos were taken from the CW 7Up portfolio with absolutely NO resizing, editing, recoloring, or retouching of any sort from yours truly. Don’t believe me..? Go check out the gallery yourself (LINK).

Everyone is blurry, squished, and pixelated! The disproportion of the shot makes Dominique look like more of a plus-sized model than Whitney!

The graininess on these is enough to make any photographer cringe!

This one has GOT to be a screen shot… and not a very good quality one at that!

And why is Anya’s hair blue? Can they not figure out how to do a simple white balance correction?

On a side rant… why is “Supermodels” in the third full line capitalized?

Here’s a tip… 7Up… CW… whoever… get a better photographer. Or screencapper. Or whatever… because that was just ridiculous.

Episode 9 Model Faces!

April 19, 2008 at 3:22 pm | Posted in Anya, Dominique, Fatima, Katarzyna, Lauren, Whitney | 1 Comment

Since I had so much fun with the previous “Model Faces,” I figured I’d re-watch episode 9 and try to find some more lovely shots of the remaining models.

So… who will be crowned America’s Next Top Model? Will it be…

Anya…

Dominique…

Fatima…

Katarzyna…

Lauren…

Whitney…

or…. the queen of model faces… Ms Tyra Banks herself?
