Episode 9: For Those About to Walk, We Salute You (airing 4/16/08 )
THE MODELS HIT THE RED CARPET Paulina drops by the loft to surprise the girls with tips on how to behave during press interviews and while attending public events. The girls are dressed by designer Jay Godfrey and must mingle with fashion world VIPs at a cocktail party. One girl breaks down when she realizes she lost her travel document and learns she may not be able to accompany the remaining girls to the secret overseas location.
My commentary on this episode here.

Episode 10: Viva Italia! (airing 4/23/08 )
The remaining models head off to their international destination, Italy, where they are faced with the challenging task of filming a commercial in Italian.
My commentary on this episode here.

Episode 11: We Are Spartans! (airing 4/30/08 )
The models learn Gladiator-style fighting with swords. Later, they are photographed by Tyra in an old Roman castle, where one of the girls leaves Tyra startled with her beauty.
Because cycle 7’s bullfighting shoot and cycle 9’s shoot as Chinese warriors defending the Great Wall against Mongol invaders weren’t enough… now ANTM is re-doing the same concept… Gladiator-style!  I think that Tyra really needs to go back to Western Civilizations 101, because gladiators didn’t fight in castles… they fought in arenas such as the Colosseum.  I guess Tyra & Co. couldn’t book the actual Colosseum?  Or perhaps — as many things tend to go in ANTM history — the training/challenge doesn’t really have anything to do with the photo shoot at all.  (Anyone remember learning how to participate in a traditional tea ceremony in China?)

I’m starting off today with a confession of sorts… I HATE recap episodes.  I think they’re horribly pointless, and usually don’t even bother watching them.  But, I had an hour to kill, so — huzzah — today you get a recap of a recap.

Recap:
Basically, we see a bunch of stuff we’ve already seen… and some new stuff we haven’t.  We have to suffer through watching the Fatima vs. Shawhatshername “you’re too ghetto” fight… we have to hear about Fatima’s circumcision again… and we have to re-live the Claire vs. Dominique alarm drama… and we have to relive the Fatima vs. Lauren coffee drama…

In some new stuff, we see Mr Jay teaches the Top Model preppies how to use different facial expressions… Stacey-Ann performs some sort of rap in her audition… we learn that Kim has no idea how to do anything on her own… we learn that Allison only eats A1 and Jello (ew!)… we learn that Marvita was sick during the lingerie shoot (surprised they didn’t mention that in the episode)… we see Amis breaking stuff, dancing, and singing “Little Bunny Foo Foo”… we see way more of Marvita than we ever wanted to… we see them having a wrestling match (which, despite what the preview said, had nothing to do with the alarm clock incident)… there’s also a funny clip about Anya taking everyone’s pictures and we see that she really does have a crazier side to her… and we see them out at a club making fools of themselves

Random thoughts:
– Having both “preparatory” and “academy” in the name “Top Model Preparatory Academy is ridiculously redundant.
– When Tyra’s voice-over is talking about how Dominique’s strong personality is in a league of its own, it seems to me she’s pretty much admitting that Dom was only cast for the drama factor
– I’m not sure Elle would appreciate being compared to the Brooklyn Bridge… somewhere in there, I think Tyra was going for a compliment.
– Stacey-Ann describes the firefighters as “really cute.”  I beg to differ… the one looked old enough to be my grandpa.
– Marvita… Jimi Hendrix you are not.
– Is emo really that obscure that people honestly don’t know what it is?  And how is R&B “one of the most recognizable genres of them all?”  Seriously, Tyra?  Remember who your audience is.
– If the bottle of vodka Stacey-Ann took really was complimentary (as in, FREE), why did she feel the need to hide it in her jacket?

Quoteable quotes:
“Every day, I don’t care what I’m doing — if I’m cooking sometimes I’ll stop and think, like, ‘Okay, if this was an ad, how would I pose?'” -Dominique (obsessive at all?)
“We have bidets!  That makes me really feel at home.” -Dominique
“Do you know how to make hot chocolate?” -Kim (ALMOST as good as ‘Do you want me to pose?’)
“Kim really is benefiting from her stupid, gimmicky stereotype and I think it’s awesome and charming.” -Amis (huh?)
“Allison is hell-a crazy.” -Marvita
“I’ll sell my milk for $50 a bottle.” -Claire
“I want to be like freakin’ Mother Theresa… but in a diva kind of way, okay?” -Dominique (Poor Mother Theresa’s probably turning in her grave!)
“Amis is crazy.  I think if you tied her to a tree, she’d argue with it.” -Whitney
“That’s my secret goal… I want to be, like, a boxer.  Or at least an action hero.” -Claire

Regardless… I made it through the entire episode without falling asleep.  Now, for the most fun part… model faces!

And… the fiercest of them all….

“Model for a Cause”

Let’s discuss.

According to a recent Tyra interview (which you can find on cwtv.com), the theme for the house is “Model for a Cause,” and will feature Tyra’s own T-Zone camp (sans Scandaleisha, I hope), as well as former ANTModels and their personal causes. Tyra wants these girls to see modeling as a platform on which to push their own agendas.

The first questions that comes to my mind are:

  • Will Adrienne be included?
  • Will Scandaleisha be included?
  • What are their “causes”? CariDee’s with the National Psoriasis Foundation, but I don’t recall any of the other winners having a “cause.”

In cycle 10, we already know some of the girls coming in here with pet causes —

    • environmentalism (Claire)
    • domestic abuse (Dominique)
    • female circumcision (Fatima)
    • feminism/body image (Whitney)

    — but I could definitely see this coming up again over and over in this cycle. Will the remaining girls have to come up with a pet cause of their own?

ANTM seems to be getting more and more demanding — not only does America’s Next Top Model have to look good, take good photos, take criticism well, be a good spokesmodel, have a bubbly personality, and be a role model for little girls, but now they also have to save the world? They might as well rename it “America’s Next Tyra Banks.”

    100th Episode?

I had no idea it was their 100th episode… huh, how ’bout that?  Also… eyes a little dead there, Tyra?

    It’s Dominique

There’s an email interview with her from The Columbus Dispatch out online (LINK).  Apparently, she participated in the Columbus Fashion Week last year as well.
“Q: Which models do you look up to?

A: I have a new appreciation for Tyra and her talents that goes beyond her beauty. I also find Paulina Porizkova (one of the show’s judges) amazing; she makes models feel at ease. And, finally, I admire Heidi Klum; she has managed to balance modeling, a family and a successful business career.” (excerpt)

    **POSSIBLE SPOILERS**

Episode 2: New York City, Here We Come
    (airing 2/27/08)

The final 14 move into their New York City apartment, which has a humanitarian theme. Soon after, Miss J and Jay Manuel take the girls to Times Square for a surprise fashion show. Finally, a new judge is introduced and one contestant makes a confession that leaves everyone stunned.

I previously posted my commentary on this episode (LINK).

Episode 3: Top Model Makeovers (airing 3/5/08)

It’s makeover time, and the ladies receive fabulous new looks. Next, they must model lingerie at their photo shoot. Finally, tension builds between two contestants, causing friction throughout the house. Special Guest: Elle McPherson

The makeover episode has got to be my favorite episode of the season… the drama, the tears, the “dramatic transformations” that the girls get from having stylists cut and dye their hair. I always find it interesting to see what Tyra thinks the girls should look like, and how many of them end up looking worse than before (think: Brittany or Renee C8, or Saleisha C9). I always have many laughs at their expense.

Lingerie photoshoots tend to be some of my least favorite, however… I totally get that models should be comfortable with their bodies and whatnot, but nude shoots and lingerie shoots (especially if they involve male models) always seem to be used as a ploy to get rid of some of the younger, less experienced, more “sheltered” models, or ones that don’t quite have the “perfect” size 0 body (or perhaps I’m just still bitter over the eliminations of Rebecca C4 and Brooke C7). And honestly, let’s face it… not every model is going to want to be a Victoria’s Secret model, or be on the cover of Maxim.

    Episode 4: Where’s the Beef? (airing 3/12/08)

The models get meaty, as they must pose with and wear meat for their photo shoot about the meatpacking industry. Meanwhile, Cycle 8 winner Jaslene Gonzalez makes an appearance that ends up with one contestant feeling hurt by something the top model says.

Wearing meat? A photoshoot about the meatpacking industry? Say what? This episode is solid proof that Tyra is officially off her rocker. The last cycle was smoke-free… is this one going to be meat-free? Are they going to focus on the dangers of mad cow disease? Is this going to be Fast Food Nation all over again (which, by the way, was one of the stupidest movies I’ve ever seen)? I hate touching raw meat — which is part of the reason that I don’t eat much meat — so the thought of posing with slabs of meat, or — even worse — WEARING slabs of meat is enough to make me feel like throwing up. And isn’t the whole “posing with meat” thing somewhat reminiscent of Cassandra C8’s ridiculous carnivore photo? Weren’t we all grossed out enough by that then? Why, oh, why must you torture us so, Tyra?

On a sidenote, however, I chuckled to myself when I realized that this is usually around the time that the previous cycle’s winner shows up to give all the girls a “my life is so wonderful now” pep talk… only this cycle, instead of the previous winner, Scandaleisha, they’ve brought back the oh-so successful Jaslene from the cycle before last. And I don’t think it’s because Scandaleisha is sooo busy with her life as a CoverGirl… if you get my drift. And who is Jaslene going to insult? My guess is Marvita (if she’s still around by then).

In case you missed it, yesterday also was the day that Tyra brought past ANTMers onto her Tyra Show for a special Top Model Insider Secrets episode (watch it on YouTube here). There was the usual recap of the drama that went on in each season, as well as interviews with the contestants to see what they’re up to now.

    Here’s what I learned:

    – During filming, Tyra tries to avoid hearing about the drama in the house. Hmmmmm… maybe she should stop in more often.
    – Tyra likes creating drama by making others relive stressful and tragic parts of their life. Oh, wait… we knew that already.
    – Fabio and Anchal sitting in a tree… k-i-s-s-i-n-g. Heh, heh.
    – By the end of the cycle, Anchal weighed more than I do. For some bizaare reason this makes me laugh.
    – The Cycle 6 house was the Black Dahlia house… freaky!
    – Tyra’s scared of babies. I’ll bet they’re scared of her, too.
    – The Cycle 1 group shot girls are all wearing Tyra’s clothes. Ummmm…kaaaaay.
    – Tocarra is probably the most successful ANTM.

You can watch it for yourself on YouTube (parts 2-3 even contain the preview for cycle 10’s premiere — woo hoo!)

    -Katie(C2) is a daddy’s girl.
    -Jael(C7) and Heather(C9) are “intimately connected” because they’re “different” — okaaaaaaaaay…
-Jael(C7) messed up her commercial because she was more focused on the kangaroos. That girl is nuts (no… wait… we knew that already).
-Eva(C3) wears fuzzy cheetah slippers. Not so tough now, are we?
-Toccara(C3) needs her own talk show. I know I would watch it.
-I like Bianca(C9) a lot better now that she’s not in the running for ANTM…. of course, that’s not saying much, since I absolutely despised her on the show. Now I merely find her tolerable.
-ANTM likes exposing people’s pain for entertainment purposes (did we really need to relive the whole Shandi thing again? It was painful enough the first time!)… oh, wait. I guess we already knew that, too.

    TV Guide Episode Descriptions

Slightly different than the one I posted yesterday (found on FORT), with some important inconsistencies and new information

    **SPOILERS**

    Welcome to Top Model Prep
The 10th cycle begins with 35 would-be models entering “Top Model Prep” in L.A. where they are schooled in posing and walking a runway. After interviewing with Tyra, the number is cut to 20 and then to 14 finalists who will fly to New York City to compete.

Okay, so the review yesterday said 30 models, TV Guide says 35… which is it? It seemed to me that they normally started out with 30, then narrowed it down to 20, then to 13 (or 14, or whatever). Anyone remember how that went?

New York City, Here We Come!
The 14 models move into a New York City apartment and visit a modeling agency where they are critiqued by Paulina Porizkova. In Times Square, they participate in a fashion show. Later, they pose as homeless individuals for a photo shoot. After appearing before the judges, the first model is eliminated.

Posing as “homeless individuals”??? Seriously??? Can you get any tackier, Tyra? So these models are going to go out there and promote a stereotype that “homeless people” dress in rags? Sit on street corners? Live in boxes? Beg for food? Pose glamorously? Wear “fierce” expressions? I’m struggling to comprehend why — in all of her “humanitarianism” — Tyra would choose to have this photo shoot, which is basically mocking a life struggle which many people would do anything to leave behind. Just imagine the individual girls’ assignments:

“Atalya, you get to be the prostitute who sells her body because she can’t get legitimate employment… Claire, you get to be the mother who steals food for her kid… Fatima, you’re going to be a panhandler… Lauren, you can be the alcoholic who gets drunk and tells everyone that you’ve seen revelations from God… and Anya, you can be the compulsive gambler who can’t hang on to a dollar.”

Having known people — kids, even! — that don’t have a home to go to at night, I find it rather appalling. There are better ways to push your humanitarian viewpoints, Tyra. MUCH better ways. Why not have the girls volunteer at a homeless shelter? Or have them tutor kids who are struggling in school because there’s no one at home to help them with their homework? Run a food drive for a food pantry? Donate some of their own designer jackets to a family in need? No, no… that would be way too “normal” and make far too much sense. I think I’m going to go throw up now.
